The CLA was founded almost 90 years ago in 1935 as a non-profit organization. Its purpose was to promote the general welfare of the lake, protect the property interests of its members (who at that time were lakefront owners), and focus on social events. Social activities in the early years included weekly square dances and potluck suppers, sponsoring men’s and women’s softball teams, establishing a sailing club, and fancy dinner dances at the Hotel Bond in Hartford. More recent social gatherings have centered on the annual meeting at the Beckish Senior Center and concerts on the lake.
The CLA recently expanded its membership to include watershed members, as shown on the map.
The President of the CLA sits on the Lake Management Advisory Committee (LMAC).
The mission of the Columbia Lake Association is to support the Town of Columbia in protecting and preserving Columbia Lake as a natural and recreational resource in accordance with the lawful interests of its members, which include:
- Preserving the ecological and environmental well-being of Columbia Lake and its watershed;
- Protecting the property interests and values within the watershed;
- Maintaining the water quality and water chemistry of Columbia Lake;
- Providing educational resources regarding ecological, chemical, land use and other environmental factors affecting Columbia Lake; and
- Providing social and recreational events and forums to promote good fellowship among its members and the interests of the Association.
The CLA communicates to its members through RIPPLES, a short informational document on topical issues, and The WAVE. The most recent edition of The WAVE 2023 was sent to all town residents.
