Columbia Lake Association

The CLA was founded almost 90 years ago in 1935 as a non-profit organization. Its purpose was to promote the general welfare of the lake, protect the property interests of its members (who at that time were lakefront owners), and focus on social events. Social activities in the early years included weekly square dances and potluck suppers, sponsoring men’s and women’s softball teams, establishing a sailing club, and fancy dinner dances at the Hotel Bond in Hartford. More recent social gatherings have centered on the annual meeting at the Beckish Senior Center and concerts on the lake.

The CLA recently expanded its membership to include all residents of the Town of Columbia.

The President of the CLA sits on the Lake Management Advisory Commission (LMAC).

The mission of the Columbia Lake Association is to serve as a forum to stimulate advocacy for the well-being and protection of Columbia Lake and its watershed and recreational users’ safety, and more specifically to:

  • Provide opportunities to encourage and stimulate cooperation, understanding, fellowship and friendly exchange among Members of the Association.
  • Foster partnerships and advocate for the development of local lake protection and restoration programs in collaboration with appropriate agencies of the Town of Columbia and the State of Connecticut.
  • Disseminate educational resources regarding ecological, chemical, land use and other environmental and safety factors affecting Columbia Lake and its watershed and recreational users, as well as new technical developments and networking opportunities.
  • Provide social and recreational events and forums to promote good fellowship among the Membership and the interests of the Association.
  • Increase Membership in the Association and the involvement of stakeholders in water resource management and recreational users’ safety.

The CLA communicates to its members through RIPPLES, a short informational document on topical issues, and The WAVE. The most recent edition of The WAVE 2023 was sent to all town residents.
