Connecticut State Law requires that anyone conducting business under an assumed name (DBA) must file a Trade Name Certificate in the Town Clerk's office in the town where business is being conducted.
All people who are authorized to sign on behalf of the business must sign their name on the Trade Name Certificate.
An Adoption of a Trade Name Certificate may be obtained by completing the State of Connecticut Trade Name Application. Please carefully review the Trade Name information on the Secretary of The State's website: Trade Name Page. The appropriate application can be found there, or can be obtained in the Town Clerk's office. Once it is completed, it must be notarized by a Notary or Town Clerk. It is then filed in the Town Clerk's office with a $20.00 filing fee. For a certified copy, please include an additional $2.00 certification fee and $1.00 per page copy fee.
Trade name requirement does not apply to: Partnerships, Limited partnerships, or Limited liability companies unless they are doing business in town under a different name. The fee is $20.00 (January 1, 2025), and all proprietors of the business must sign the trade name certificate before a notary public or Town Clerk. The fee to cancel a Trade Name is also $20.00 (eff. January 1, 2025).
