CLASPING PONDWEED RAKING: PILOT PROGRAM

Residents may apply to be included in the pondweed removal pilot program at Town Hall between June 23rd and July 1st. Fifteen (15) properties will be selected to be in the pondweed removal pilot program. These properties may remove Clasping pondweed from the approved location between July 1- July 15th, 2025. Prior to removal, the Wetland Agent must inspect the proposed removal location

Raking is allowed only near docks or swimming areas from July 1 to July 15 by permit only.

Clasping pondweed (Potamogeton perfoliatus) is a native aquatic species, obligate wetland indicator, and found primarily under water, although sometimes on palustrine and riverine mud flats. The leaf blades clasp the stem of the plant, and it spreads easily during the seeding period of late July to August. Removal should only be allowed until mid-July to avoid unwarranted spreading. Clasping pondweed functions to maintain the ecosystem of the lake by stabilizing sediments and providing food for fish, macro-invertebrates, crustaceans and avian species. The plant currently occupies 31 acres or 11% of the lake and is not considered excessive.
